Our Mission

We are a professional Association, national in scope, comprised of IA Directors of Athletics.

As stewards of our profession, we bear responsibility for all facets of professional administration of the intercollegiate athletic programs within the community of higher education.

As a service organization, we provide and coordinate a comprehensive array of professional services in response to the needs and wants of our member schools.

1A Athletic Directors’ Association

At the 1A Athletic Directors’ Annual Meeting in September, Brad Bates, Director of Athletics at Miami University, was elected to lead the D1A Athletic Directors’ Association in 2011-2012.

Since 2002, Brad Bates has lead Miami University through the development of his vision of a Culture of Champions. Its women’s programs have been honored by the Mid-American Conference with the Jacoby Award for athletic excellence. His men’s programs have won the Reese Trophy for the best all-around men’s sports programs. Paramount among Bates’ accomplishments has been the department’s success in the graduation of its student-athletes. Miami has consistently ranked among the best Division 1A programs nationally, with a number of its individual programs posting the highest scores nationally.

Bates, who came to Miami after 17 years at Vanderbilt University, achieved a doctorate in education at Vanderbilt in 1997. This followed the bachelor’s and master’s degrees he earned in education at the University of Michigan in 1981 and 1982.

An outstanding administrator, Brad will lead the association as it continues to serve the Directors of Athletics in the 1A Association.
